Waupaca Elevator Recall

The CPSC announced a recall for Waupaca elevators in late July. The elevators are made in Appleton, Wisconsin and have a weight capacity of 450 or 500 pounds. The serial numbers for recalled models are 10-1001 through 10-3112 and 110-00-8112 through 010-10-8786. The CPSC says that the company has a large backlog for overspeed safety device installation.

The recall involves over 8,000 residential elevators. A Waupaca elevator may suddenly fall, causing a crash. There have been 15 reports of falls, including two deaths. One woman, Delores Bracken, fell three stories in her own home and broke a bone in her leg. In another case, a passenger in a Millbrae, California, Waupaca elevator died due to a faulty brake device.
